My name is Lori. I am originally from Staten Island, NY and have lived in Northeast PA since the end of 2000. I am a mother of 6 children and 4 grandchildren.<\/span><\/h6>\n
I was diagnosed with Neuroendocrine Cancer a few days before Christmas of 2009 of my terminal ileum. I had my colon resection in January 2010. I live in a rural area of PA and at that time it was very difficult to find a NET specialist let alone someone who knew anything about this rare cancer. Since my journey has started, I have been on a roller coaster of back and forth of \u201cNED.\u201d I had a tumor removed April 2021 in my duodenum and am in current treatment.<\/span><\/h6>\n
Through my years I have learned that you need to advocate for yourself! If you are not comfortable with what is said even from a doctor, ask questions and even go for a 2nd or 3rd option. I have also realized that we are our own unique community. There needs to be more awareness out there, not just among individuals but also the medical field.<\/span><\/h6>\n
I think it\u2019s very important to have a support team and someone to turn to. Someone to vent to, ask questions, not just the patient but also the caregivers, the family. I connected with Maryann and NCAN years ago and have found her helpful in many ways. She has connected me to many resources. I am so excited and happy to be bringing a piece of that support to the Northeast part of PA, especially since we are very rural.<\/span><\/h6>\n
